Arlington Memorial Bridge Repairs

Scope of Work
²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵAPP performed repairs on the existing steel inside the bascule span of the iconic Arlington Memorial Bridge in Washington, D.C. One of the most famous bridges in the world, the Arlington Memorial Bridge is a Neoclassical masonry, steel, and stone arch bridge with a central bascule that crosses the Potomac River. This bridge facilitates the crossing of late presidents, politicians, and military patriots to a final resting place in the Arlington National Cemetery.
Project Details
  • Repaired bearing pads
  • Added additional structural steel column supports to secure the center weight
  • Added additional floor beam supports for roadway
  • Repaired unsound concrete and joint repairs on the north and south sidewalks
  • Repaired concrete floor beams in seven locations within the piers
  • Added major miscellaneous structural steel to support roadway and sidewalk
  • Perform lead abatement and cleaning
Lean, Innovative and Unique Project Solutions
One of the major challenges on this project included access to perform the necessary repairs in both the bascule span and within the piers. Weight restrictions on the bridge limit the type of equipment that could be used to load material into place and perform the work. The work performed required a detailed Management of Traffic (MOT) Plan, innovative material delivery and handling, and close coordination with the National Park Service (NPS) and Eastern Federal Lands Highway Division (EFLHD). Another challenge included managing and redirecting the large amount of vehicular and pedestrian traffic that utilize the bridge, including U.S. Senators and the President of the United States.
